What is your bedtime ritual?
I finish my work/parent day downstairs – leave the computer and anything related to those roles downstairs. Go upstairs, say goodnight to my kids, brush, floss, mouthwash, set my alarm, complete any urgent tasks on my phone before plugging it in, turning it to silent, and turning it face down. Stretch for approximately 5-10 minutes. Talk with my wife about our individual days and tomorrow’s plan. Read (sometimes).
In the last 5 years, what new belief, behavior or habit has most improved your sleep?
Getting a minimum of 7 hours of sleep every night, generally 8. I learned how detrimental lack of sleep is, and how it affects our brains so negatively. I no longer sacrifice my sleep.
If you have had a particularly challenging day and your normal bedtime routine isn’t enough for you to fall asleep, what do you try next?
Instead of “trying” to fall asleep, I simply embrace the moment, reminding myself there will be a time when all of this ends. I notice the comfort of my bed, the warmth of my wife’s body next to mine, the stillness in my world in that moment, and I allow the thoughts to go wherever they are taking me as though I’m listening to a podcast. When I stop trying to fall asleep, I usually will without much more time or effort.
