Dr. Meggie Smith
Dr. Meggie Smith first learned the power of chiropractic energy medicine when she was struggling with her mental and physical health while she in her early 20s. Neither medical doctors nor psychotherapists could help her. She found relief only with an energy medicine chiropractor who understood how her emotional distress was an expression of physical imbalances. She has continued to use chiropractic energy medicine to feel more grounded, hopeful, trusting and at peace.
She is Webster certified in perinatal chiropractic and has studied energetic chiropractic techniques including Bio Geometric Integration (BGI), Network Spinal Analysis (NSA), NeuroEmotional Technique (NET) and Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique (BEST). She has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from The University of Chicago. That degree has allowed her to think critically about finding the truth in healing modalities and parsing the nuance of medical research. She has a Doctor of Chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College West in the San Francisco Bay Area, a school renowned for its strong BGI focus on and off campus.
She is the President of the Main Dempster Mile, the former Philanthropy chair of the Woman’s Club of Evanston and was appointed by the Mayor of Evanston to the Citizen Police Complaint Advisory Committee. She lives in Evanston with her partner Neil and spends her free time attempting to make entertaining videos for her niece and nephews. They still prefer the videos of her cats.
What is your bedtime ritual?
My bedtime ritual is candles and salt lamps. About 45 minutes before I go to bed, I turn off over head lights. I brush my teeth and prepare for sleep with only candles, salt lamps and other calming lighting.
In the last 5 years, what new belief, behavior or habit has most improved your sleep?
My sleep has been dramatically improved recently by committing to vacuuming my mattress and pillows a few times a month. My two cats get great sleep on my bed for hours of the day! Regularly vacuuming the mattress has done amazing things to help my sleep at night by keeping allergens at a minimum.
If you have had a particularly challenging day and your normal bedtime routine isn’t enough for you to fall asleep, what do you try next?
As I’m falling asleep, I listen to The Empty Bowl, which describes itself as “a meditative podcast about cereal.” The hosts talk quietly about the latest flavors of cereal with the intention of helping you fall asleep. It is a truly such a low stakes topic that you will never get too invested in the episode and stay awake. I listen to the same episodes over and over. I rarely make it to the end of the episode!
