What happens in a Vibrational Sound Relaxation Therapy session?
Therapeutic grade singing bowls are placed directly on and/or around the body and used as a focal point for your attention. The powerful vibration and soothing ambient tones induce a deep restful state. You will remain fully clothed and typically lie face up or down on a table. Your practitioner will indicate the location the bowls will be placed prior to the start of the session. The soothing and gentle sessions may last for 25 or 50 minutes. For beginners, we recommend the longer sessions. Acupuncture clients may elect a 15-minute vibrational sound relaxation therapy add-on to their treatment.
During and after a session, mind chatter is calmed, muscles relax, cortisol levels fall, and heart and breathing rates slow. The session activates the parasympathetic nervous system to bring the body into a state conducive to healing itself. A vibrational sound relaxation therapy session brings on similar brain states to yoga, tai chi, qi gong and meditation.
Vibrational sound relaxation therapy enhances the healing effects of acupuncture. One of my best acupuncture experiences had singing bowls integrated into the treatment, and some of my clients have had the same experience.

How does Vibrational Sound Relaxation Therapy work?
The body is made up of 70 percent water; therefore, the vibrations can penetrate deeply into the muscles and tissues, as well as on a cellular level. Once the body begins to relax, respiratory and heart rate slow down and blood pressure lowers. The long resonant harmonic tones of the bowls allow the brain to enter alpha and even delta and theta brainwave states through entrainment. The vibrations and low, mellow tones activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
Contraindications for Sound Relaxation Therapy
On the body treatments are not recommended for clients who are pregnant, have an acute illness, or metastatic cancer. If you are unsure whether you can receive vibrational sound therapy, contact us at 815.814.1319 to discuss or reach out to your physician. You can explain vibrational sound relaxation therapy to your physician as an on-the-body relaxation technique that uses singing bowls as a subtle vibration and sound instrument that is rung directly on the body. The gentle sounds and vibrations help activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
